Bio 113 and Dr. Eric

We started our OSU class this week with lecture on Thursday and Lab on Friday at Jennings Hall on campus. We are pretty good at the microscope by now and most of us made the 6:45 AM( yes that is AM) bus to campus. Lecture was good and we like our new professor ,even though we all needed a little "java" to get going.

Area, Volume and Agar...Oh My!

So how does NaOH effect the volume of an agar square? Just ask us :)

Microscopes and Heavy Books

We started another week learning many lessons. First..college textbooks are very heavy..second microscopes with 1000X magnification are really cool... but not so easy to focus and third oil immersion lenses ....interesting .

College Lessons

We found out attending college required patience and a lot of waiting. We got our BUCK-I-D and visited the book store for our new Biology Books and lab manuals. Walking, waiting, smiling, standing, walking some more, hunger, thirst, long bus rides..but we made it and are now "official" Buckeyes!

Heart and Lung Research Center

Friday we visisted OSU and attended a lecture on Cardiovascular MRI's at the Heart and Lung Research Institute.

EKG

We learned how to do an EKG this week. Once we got the electrodes hooked up, we found our p waves and recorded our data. Below are pictures ....ZZZZZap!

Blood Pressure

The school nurse taught us blood pressure the old-fashioned way, then we tried the computerized method. Believe it or not, the former was more accurate. Here Colby and Matthew practice their doctor skills.

Check Your Pulse.

Kyle, Nathan, a race, pulse rate analysis . . . fun. Almost as fun as seeing what a "screamer" does to your pulse.

Hearts Dissected!

Hearts open wide! The students dissected sheep hearts this week and produced videos of the experience for their lab report.

Trail Blazers

Some portraits of Friday's adventurers. The Bodies students have been very ambitious and hard working.

OSU Orientation

The students explored OSU's campus on Friday. They found their lab where they will work on Bio 113 and 114, and they made it back to us at the Wexner Center to catch the bus.

Inquiring how to build a pump

The students also designed pumps using their physics know-how and a set of basic supplies. They were not given any instructions. It was neat to see them discover ways to make it work.

BioMedical Artists

The students did some heart art this week.

Mystery Crackers

The biomedical class started with a mystery concerning the death of a fictitious 35-year old female. After studying the coroner's report, Andrew, Lili, and Julie cracked the case first. Other teams were close on their tale - one turning in the correct response only 1 minute later.
Well done young biomedical scientists!

Columbus Dispatch Article

The Columbus Dispatch recently visited Bodies in order to talk with us about how the roll-out of this Metro program has gone. It was nice to talk with Jennifer Smith Richards and work with photographer Tom Dodge. The article can be found here:

Coroner's Office

Friday, September 4, we visited the Franklin County Coroner's office. We visited toxicology labs, the pathology lab and watched two autopsies. Many of us that wanted to be forensic scientists have definitely changed our minds.
